The lyrics could also be interpreted as the speaker chasing their passion or dream, which is why they need to “burn out the day and night”. Here the devil could refer to the object of their affection to whom they are willing to do anything. This interpretation can be supported by the chorus: “I’m living for giving the devil his due, And I’m burning, I’m burning, I’m burning for you”. This is where the chorus of “burning out the day” and night come in, as it can be seen as a metaphor for making the most of every moment.Īnother interpretation of the song can be that the speaker is chasing after someone they love, who might not reciprocate their feelings. As the song progresses, the speaker talks about the essence of time and how it’s fleeting, and they are not willing to waste it on things that don’t matter to them. This is emphasized by the repetition of the phrase “home isn’t” which not only reinforces the idea of the lack of home but also the emphasis on the speaker’s discontentment. The speaker laments the concept of a traditional home, where there is no sense of belonging or comfort for them. The opening lines of Blue Öyster Cult’s “Burnin’ for You” sets the stage for a dissonance of reality versus expectations, particularly in the context of what is considered to be a home.
